MGT Rotary Series Design Highlights

Adopting ※scotch§ yoke mechanism brings MGT rotary actuators attractively compact comparing to typical rack-and-pinion type actuators. The MGT rotary actuators are suitable for quarter-turn rotary applications.

A typical MGT rotary torque curve is close to torque curves of the quarter-turn valves, including ball valves and butterfly valves. Further, MGT rotary could also be used for air dampers.

Comparing to constant torque output, MGT rotary offers its torque curve closer to the actual torque curve. Because of this character, MGT rotary actuators could be often one size smaller than typical rack-and-pinion rotary actuators.

Also from the curve, MGT rotary actuators show quite evenly provides extra torques through the whole travel. At the fully open and close positions, this ※extra§ torque is typically higher than those at other points of travel. This character is important for effectively open the quarter-turn valves.

MGT linear pneumatic actuator series has been proven to be the most rugged and high reliable actuator products suitable for severe service applications. With its uniquely designed cylinder, feedback system, and high-performance intelligent electric-pneumatic postioner as well as tight assembly and quality system, MGT linear series is the symbol of maintenance-free operations under million of cycles. MGT linear series could be used widely in power, metallurgy, oil/gas, petrochemical, metallurgy industries and many others.

Comparing to typical rotary actuators, linear actuators often represent a unique solution for rotary applications. These devices, such as dampers and valves, might not have either enough front installation envelope to install a rotary actuator or convenience of constructing linkage system. MGT linear actuators provide the vertical installation to the axis of rotary devices to be controlled.

High Performance Cylinders

The MGT linear actuators use heavy-duty cylinders exceed typical industrial grade cylinders with many special considerations, especially these on seals and materials. In severe service environments, the perfectly designed seal/cleaning gland make sure no hazardous particles to be excluded outside the cylinders regardless of harsh environments or frequency of piston rod extension and retraction.

High Responsiveness

MAGTECH makes sure that its MGT series achieve the highest responsiveness and positioning accuracy. The following picture shows why it is important for any actuator to have high responsiveness to the command signal from the DCS.



For each incremental change of 1.0% opening, low accuracy pneumatic actuators will delay its response to the incoming command signal for seconds. It significantly postpones the execution of the opening modulation of a damper of valve, which in term detoritate the process optimization. Therefore, quick response to the command signal from DCS is essential to high quality system integrity.

FEEDBACK MECHANISM

Ball-Bearing Guided Feedback mechanism uses micro ball-bearing feedback to provide virtually friction-free to the rail groove and thus guarantees immediate response to the new command signal.
 
The feedback mechanism is preloaded. Properly preloaded feedback mechanism accurately balances the actuator structure to prevent deflection under the load. It is often to see the damage of the feedback device due to the deflection caused by the mechanism without fine-tuned preload.

INTRODUCTION

MAGTECH sets its goal of designing its CM Series actuators not only with a higher outdoor water-proof and dust-proof classes but also special requirements, such as explosion-proof, running speed control, multiple setup modes, emergency shutdown, etc., which might be required from our yearly experiences of dealing with these mission-critical applications. Taking these requirements into our design as our ※BASIC§ specification, CM Series actuators indeed satisfy all your specification requirements and beyond. They are best suitable for your mission-critical control applications in power, metallurgy, oil/gas, petroleum and petrochemical, cement, glass, pulp and paper, water/waste water, etc. industries.

Modern processing control system has command element(such as DCS), measuring element(sensors and transmitters), and execution element(actuators). Regardless process differences and/or control element differences, it is the actuator to complete the final command execution. Since both command and measuring elements are real-time and, extremely important, the overall effectiveness of the system depends on the effectiveness of the weakest element in the system, thus it is the actuator fundamentally determines the quality of command execution. CM series answers the challenger with its continuous modulation, high responsiveness, precise positioning accuracy and repeatability, high-speed with adjustable ability, and function-rich software system.

The above cut-view shows the main components of the CM series actuators. CM Series actuators deliver torque from 250N*m(200Ft*lbs) all the way to 16,000N*m(11800Ft*lbs) in a ruggedly constructed package. Thanks to our advanced software programming and refined utilization of brushless DC motor technology, the running torque could be field adjustable from 30% rated torque at 10% adjustment interval. This feature makes optimized torque setting against actual torque becomes possible even the original design torque is oversized for avoiding possible damage from unnecessarily large torque.

Brushless DC motor drives the fully-lubricated friction-free spur gear geartrain to generate the required torque at wide range of speeds. At its output shaft the CM actuators smoothly deliver the required torque at any modulation rate the system needs in real time to perform any precise positioning through typically drive arm and rod linkage system. The spherical joints could be provided for added mounting flexibility. The mechanical stop provides final step of end of travel protection.

Since the position transmitter is directly geared with feedback gear, this arrangement guarantees a backlash-free precise position feedback. Rigorous structural design could stand the harshest service conditions. The CM series actuators come with standard IP67 water-proof enclosure with optional explosion-proof enclosure for those environments with flammable materials.

UNRESTRICTED CONTINUOUS MODULATION

With CM Series actuator*s unrestricted continuous modulation capability, actuation is no longer to be blamed for DCS control functionality or any control loop restriction!

In comparing to pneumatic actuators, CM series is permanently energized to position the controlled device with balanced force. The typical pneumatic actuator would have to wait to reach the enough air pressure and generate the required torque for modulating. As soon as positioning starts, there is still too much air pressure so that it is quite hard to prevent ※overshot§ at any new position. Thus the actual positioning is ※shifted§ from the command position from DCS as being shown below

In comparing to typical low modulation electric actuators, such as the electric actuators with wormgear geartrain, CM Series actuators could follow up process variables in real-time fashion. This feature is extremely important! It is this feature to set the CM Series apart from any typical wormgear actuators. As long as its accuracy and deadband setting same as those at DCS controls, CM Series actuator would seamlessly follow process variable. On the other hand, the fact worm-wheel and worm-shaft are smashingly engaged into each other mechanically blocks any possibility of doing high modulation due to the repeated high structural stresses and associated damage.

A typical DCS process variable could be calculated every 0.25 second, through which a new command signal could be sent to a designated actuator for execution. CM Series actuators are capable of doing the highest level of modulation as what the control system is set. Thus CM Series actuators could set its related parameters, including speed, deadband, slow-speed zone, etc., to match the settings of the control system. Using 2% as the example of each single positioning adjustment, after setting the command modulation rate at 7200 stars/hour on a CM Series actuator, comparing the positioning to that of a typical wormgear actuator with its peak S4/S5 1200 starts/hour modulation, CM series actuator follows up the process variable command very closely. This close follow up is translated into much higher processing efficiency at the control system required modulation setting.

NDEPENDENTLY ADJUSTABLE SPEEDS AND TORQUES

CM Series actuators are capable of adjusting its running speeds keeping torque unchanged. This feature brings convenience of changing speed as your wish. The CM Series actuators are designed to set its full speed at the high speed typically needed for fast moves. When a slow speed is needed, CM Series actuators could do either two things through its powerful system software setup, including resetting a slower speed and wider slow-speed zone.

The running torque of a CM Series actuator could be reset independently from speed to best fit the application. Often a larger torque is probably needed for an air damper after years of services. Thanks to the long service lives of CM Series actuators, our customers have their wish and convenience to reset a higher torque as long as there is a torque reserve during initial project torque sizing. During new project installation, it is possible to find out that the original calculated torque was way to conservative and thus a reduced torque would fit the application better. CM Series actuators offer you this freedom as well.

HOSGG Geartrain NEVER LEAKING

Regardless of what pressurized actuator technology, such as pneumatic or hydraulic technology, is used and how well the special measures is taken for better seals, soon or later somewhere of these kinds of actuators will leak under pressurized operations, which would be typically followed by expensive repairs and economic loses due to halting operations. It they were used in low modulation applications, leaking problem might not be noticeable. For those mission-critical applications requiring high modulation, frequent modulation hurts the seals and fittings badly and quickly. This problem becomes worse while the manufactures are eager to raise the internal pressure for achieving smaller actuator sizes. It is obvious that the customer would have second thought when considering purchasing pressurized actuators, in which the customer already know the high maintenance cost down the road.

Our High Precision Spur Gear Geartrain(HPSGG) lays down a solid mechanical base for CM series actuators to be zero leakage and virtually maintenance-free . All HPSGG are accurately assembled with alloy spur gears, high precision bearings, and synthetic oil lubrication. Of course they work under the normal atmosphere pressure. CM Series actuators could be also mounted at different orientations. In brief, our customers would be able to forget anxious maintenance concerns and erase bad experiences of all sorts of leaking typically associated with pressurized actuation technologies.

FLEXIBLE SELECTIONS OF OPERATION PARAMETERS
  • STROKE LIMITING 每 With internal ※Hunting-Free§ default deadband LBD, when ※Close Stroke Limiting§ is set, the CM actuator is tripped when the stroke reaches 0%+LBD. So does ※Open Stroke Limiting§ at the opening stroke of 100%-LBD.
  • TORQUE LIMITING 每 ※Close Torque Limiting§ could be set between 1.0% and -1.0%. Any close stroke beyond -1.0% is further considered as completely close. In both cases, the CM actuator is tripped. So does the ※Open Torque Limiting§ during its setup between 101% and 99% position and the open stroke is beyond 101%. Note: At this position, Torque Limiting is not considered a fault.
  • COMMAND SIGNAL SLOPE 每 NORMAL and REVERSE are available. If NORMAL is selected, 4mA is 0% position and 20mA is100% position. When REVERSE is selected, 4mA is 100% position and 20mA is 0% position.
  • FEEDBACK SIGNAL SLOPE 每 Same as those in COMMAND SIGNAL SLOPE.

CONVENIENT INITIAL SETUP PREFERENCES

※User Setup§ Sub-menu provides the convenience per user preferences which do not affect CM actuator functionality. It is rather a setting preference in the way a specific user likes.

  • LANGUAGE SELECTION 每 Could be set in either English or Chinese.
  • CONTACT ADJUSTMENT 每 Fine-tune the LCD display contract to compensate the possible display change due to the temperature.
  • PASSWORD 每 User decides if a password is needed to prevent any unauthorized setting changes. If it is desired, a password could be set to enter any sub-menu.
  • DATE AND TIME SETUP 每 It is required to set the current date in year, month, and date and time in hour, minute, and second.
  • RESORTE DEFAULT 每 Restore the last setup data prior to delivery out of factory.
  • CURRENT ALARM CLEARANCE 每 Clear all current alarms, after which the system software will re-check actuator and make sure its normal functionality.

EMERGENCY OPERATION
In order to handle unexpected circumstances, CM Actuators has an ※Emergency Mode§. Whenever it is enabled, the actuators will move per setup in the ※Emergency Mode§. If the Mode is set as ※Hold Last Position§, the actuator will override any current operation and stop immediately. Or, if the Mode is set to ※Preset Position§, the actuator will move to the position at emergency speed. The ※Emergency Mode§ is released afterward.
  • LOCAL EMERGENCY RUN 每 Press ※EMERG§ on either local station or hand-held controller, ※Emergency Mode§ is enabled. The actuator will execute the Mode and back to normal afterward at which the actuator could be controlled normally.
  • REMOTE EMERGENCY RUN 每 In remote Mode, if the designated binary input is on, the actuator enters Emergency Mode until the input is off and back to normal remote control. The validity of Emergency Mode is set through the ※Binary Input Style§ in the ※Attribute Modification§.

NON-INTRUSIVE INFRARED WIRELESS SETUP
Often the customers don*t have open access to use the Local Operation Station at installation sites. For providing extra convenience, CM series has special handheld controller using infrared wireless technology to do full function setup just like using the Local Operation Station(Below picture) for parameter setup and switching operation modes.

The Controller has Single or Group Control Mode, which could be switch between. Each CM actuator has a unique address.

  • SINGLE CONTROL 每 Only the current CM actuator is controlled by the controller.
  • GROUP CONTROL 每 Infrared command is going to be taken by all the CM actuators within the range of the infrared singles from this wireless controller.

EASY OPERATION MODE SWITCHING
  • Local Control 每 Could be set as ON/OFF or ON/STOP/OFF
  • Remote Control 每 External command could be binary, analog, or digital
  • Parameter Setup 每 Select operation modes and set up actuator parameters. Main page has six sub-manus, including ※Common Parameters§, ※Attribute Modification§, End Position Setup§, User Info Setup§, ※Name Plate Info§, and ※Operation Record§.

FLEXIBLE SELECTIONS OF OPERATION PARAMETERS
  • STROKE LIMITING 每 With internal ※Hunting-Free§ default deadband LBD, when ※Close Stroke Limiting§ is set, the MT actuator is tripped when the stroke reaches 0%+LBD. So does ※Open Stroke Limiting§ at the opening stroke of 100%-LBD.
  • TORQUE LIMITING 每 ※Close Torque Limiting§ could be set between 1.0% and -1.0%. Any close stroke beyond -1.0% is further considered as completely close. In both cases, the MT actuator is tripped. So does the ※Open Torque Limiting§ during its setup between 101% and 99% position and the open stroke is beyond 101%. Note: At this position, Torque Limiting is not considered a fault.
  • COMMAND SIGNAL SLOPE 每 NORMAL and REVERSE are available. If NORMAL is selected, 4mA is 0% position and 20mA is100% position. When REVERSE is selected, 4mA is 100% position and 20mA is 0% position.
  • FEEDBACK SIGNAL SLOPE 每 Same as those in COMMAND SIGNAL SLOPE.
  • BINARY INPUT STATUS 每 Have ※Normally Close(NC)§ and ※Normally Open(NO§ available, which determines if the remote signal in effect when it is NC or NO.
  • LOCAL PUSHBUTTON STYLE 每 Have ※Yes§ or ※No§. This function gives the user the choice to use OPEM/CLOSE or OPEN/STOP/CLOSE through software setting.
